Irena Massarella
My interests are broad and eclectic. I’m drawn to sketching scenes of everyday life in pen and watercolour, trying to capture the energy of a moment as it unfolds. Flowers and botanical subjects feature strongly in my work, where I enjoy building up images through layers of watercolour glazes. I’m equally drawn to architectural subjects, especially ruins, where I can get lost in detail for hours.
I also love the drama of big skies and open landscapes — working outdoors in oil or pen and wash, responding to light, atmosphere, and change.
I am an exhibiting member of both the Dedham Art Society and Colchester Art Society. Since 2019, I have sold work locally and in Scotland, donating a percentage of my sales each year to cancer research.
Painting first became important to me during periods of illness, and although that time is now behind me, it continues to shape how and why I work. It remains a steady part of my life — something that supports both wellbeing and a deeper connection to the world around me.
For me, painting is about paying attention — to light, to place, and to the small, often overlooked moments that make up everyday life.
