Plein Air Painting in Dedham

Saturday 23rd May was Dedham Art Society’s monthly plein air session, and this time we were right on home turf in the beautiful village of Dedham.

It turned out to be a very warm and sunny day, with temperatures reaching 27°, so the shade of the trees was definitely appreciated!

We started the morning together with coffee and light snacks at The Boatyard before heading off in different directions to paint and sketch. Around a dozen members took part, working in a wonderful variety of media including oils, acrylics, gouache, watercolour and pen and wash.

Subjects ranged from peaceful river views and scenes around the mill, to the church tower peeking through the trees, as well as some beautiful landscape studies of fields and trees in the surrounding countryside. One member even completed two separate landscape paintings during the session using fast-drying acrylics!

We were surrounded by cows, horses, paddle boarders and plenty of people enjoying the sunshine by the water with picnics and family outings, which made for a lovely atmosphere throughout the day.

Many of us met up again later for lunch at the boathouse, and some members also visited the Duchy Barn to see fellow members’ work in our current exhibition, which continues over the bank holiday weekend until Monday.

Here are some of the wonderful pieces created during the day 🎨
