DAS Plein Air ~ Munnings Art Museum, Dedham -Thursday 13 August

With many thanks to The Munnings Museum, Dedham, a good number of DAS members enjoyed a great en plein air day on 13 August 2026, albeit during a heat wave.

Seeking the shade of the trees  and tearooms it was a lovely opportunity to socialise, to share enthusiasm for the excellent work produced or started using a range of medium.

We were fortunate to receive a guided tour of the current exhibition celebrating the Museum’s 65 Anniversary showcasing loaned pictures that illustrate the enduring popularity of Munnings paintings held in collections across the world. It was also fascinating to see how Constable influenced some of Munnings’ paintings, including a selection of Constable-inspired cloud studies.

The dappled light of the trees and the illuminated 15th century house in the sunlight offered an opportunity for a very creative day working outside. Alfred Munnings, I’m sure, would approve with his love of nature and fascination of depicting light and shade.
